Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).&nbsp;</p> <p>One of SSHRC’s annual Impact Awards, the Insight Award recognizes scholars whose work has made a significant contribution to knowledge and understanding about people, societies and the world.&nbsp;</p> <p>A renowned scholar of authoritarianism, contentious politics and development in China, Ong has conducted on-the-ground research in the country since the late 1990s.&nbsp;She says she’s pleasantly surprised at winning the Insight Award.</p> <p>“I’d like to thank the people who have helped me along the way,” says Ong, a faculty fellow at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology &amp; Society and acting director of the Munk School’s Contemporary Asian Studies program. “As an inherently private person, I need to adjust to this public recognition. Science, crafted a video story,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hMFMMCvtM0&amp;list=PLww1dvjSoO4MtTyFG5SbAcWf9m9vPDFKn&amp;index=2">“Contested Memories and Revised Myths,”</a> that examines how collective memory shapes identity and belonging.&nbsp;Drawing on archival analysis and interviews with former members of the Mau Mau movement that originated in Kenya in the 1950s,&nbsp;Aboubakar argues that memories shift in response to transnational politics, and explores implications of the research for&nbsp;reconciliation, justice and addressing historical grievances.</p> <p>Parke, a PhD student in the Faculty of Information, also submitted a video story, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYJK4k5qQAc&amp;list=PLww1dvjSoO4MtTyFG5SbAcWf9m9vPDFKn&amp;index=13">“Speculating Race: Creator Motivations for Designing Virtual Influencers of Colour,”</a> that discusses the juxtaposition between market research that asserts that white and female influencers are disproportionately favoured by both audiences and brands and the virtual influencer world, where a majority of CGI- and AI-rendered characters present themselves as ethnic minorities. His work&nbsp;led to Canadian law reforms in 2005 concerning obtaining evidence from children. Since 2006, a legal procedure based on his research must be employed to admit children as witnesses in Canadian criminal courts.</p> <p>“Professor Lee’s research has made a broad impact across critical areas in education, and his exceptional scholarship, teaching, and mentoring of educational researchers are remarkable contributions to the field, to OISE, and to U of T,” said Professor&nbsp;<strong>Erica Walker</strong>, dean of OISE.</p> <p>“He is highly deserving of this Insight Award, a prestigious honour for an outstanding professor. His political philosophy expertise includes the works of 17th-century English philosopher Thomas Hobbes.</p> <p>&nbsp;“My unusual take on Hobbes is that one finds in him the first sophisticated theory of the modern legal state and the rule of law,” says Dyzenhaus.</p> <p>Dyzenhaus, who holds U of T’s Albert Abel Chair of Law, is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a corresponding fellow of the British Academy. In particular, the Talent Award recognizes outstanding research achievement and career potential from a SSHRC doctoral or postdoctoral fellowship or scholarship holder.</p> <p>“Despite having only just received her doctorate in political science (with distinction) from Université de Montréal in 2021, Semra Sevi has already demonstrated she is an outstanding and prolific researcher with impact as a public scholar,” noted SSHRC in its award citation.</p> <p>“I am committed to open science and developing research-driven responses to political inequality,” says Sevi, who was most recently a Banting postdoctoral researcher in the department of political science at Columbia University and received the award prior to joining U of T.</p> <p>“SSHRC support gives my research credibility and has encouraged me to keep going.”</p> <p>Sevi has earned global recognition for creating and making public datasets of all candidates for office in Canadian federal elections since 1867. This achievement was central to her doctoral dissertation, titled <em>What Voters Want: Identifying Voter Preferences for Candidates</em>. The datasets were first published on the Harvard University Dataverse in 2019 and have since been downloaded thousands of times. This distinction is a testament to the high regard in which she is held by her peers, colleagues and partners.”&nbsp;</p> <p>A doctoral student at the Women and Gender Studies Institute at U of T, studying under the supervision of Associate Professor&nbsp;<strong>Eve Tuck</strong>, Maynard is an award-winning author, Vanier scholar and community organizer whose work focuses on racist and gender-based violence and discrimination.
