Her&nbsp;transformational advances in tissue engineering have resulted in new methods for growing human tissue in the lab. Her team was among the first in the world to use electrical impulses and specially designed bioreactors to guide heart cells to assemble into a structure in which they beat independently of a body. The team also designed an injectable tissue patch that could be used to repair hearts, livers or other organs damaged by disease or injury. These technologies are the basis of the spinoff companies&nbsp;T<a href="https://tarabiosystems.com/">ARA Biosystems</a> and Quthero.&nbsp;</p> <p>Among Radisic’s many honours are t<a href="https://news.engineering.utoronto.ca/professor-milica-radisic-receives-steacie-prize/">he Steacie Prize</a> and Steacie Fellowship, the 2019 Research and Development Medal from the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers and Professional Engineers Ontario&nbsp;and the 2018 YWCA Toronto Woman of Distinction award.</p> <h3><a href="https://news.engineering.utoronto.ca/milica-radisic-receives-killam-fellowship/">Read more about Radisic and her Killam Research Fellowship</a></h3> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-source field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">FASE</div> <div class="field field--name-field-top-story-hub-page- field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Top Story (Hub page)</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Tue, 26 May 2020 14:00:12 +0000 lanthierj 164710 at Professor Molly Shoichet receives Connaught Innovation Award /celebrates/professor-molly-shoichet-receives-connaught-innovation-award <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Professor Molly Shoichet receives Connaught Innovation Award </span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-type/research-innovation" hreflang="en">Research &amp; Innovation</a></div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>lanthierj</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2020-03-10T17:14:23-04:00" title="Tuesday, March 10, 2020 - 17:14" class="datetime">Tue, 03/10/2020 - 17:14</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-people/faculty" hreflang="en">Faculty</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-campus field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-campus/st-george" hreflang="en">St. George</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/faculty-applied-science-engineering" hreflang="en">Faculty of Applied Science &amp; Engineering</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/ibbme" hreflang="en">IBBME</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/department-chemical-engineering-applied-chemistry" hreflang="en">Department of Chemical Engineering &amp; Applied Chemistry</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/donnelly-centre-cellular-biomolecular-research" hreflang="en">Donnelly Centre for Cellular &amp; Biomolecular Research</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/women-stem" hreflang="en">Women in STEM</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image-orientation field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field__item">landscape</div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/media/Molly%20Shoichet_Credit%20Neil%20Ta.jpg" width="750" height="500" alt="headshot of Molly Shoichet"> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item">(photo by Neil Ta)</div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards-funding/university-professors/">University Professor</a> <strong>Molly Shoichet</strong>&nbsp;of the department of chemical engineering and applied chemistry and IBBME at the Faculty of Applied Science &amp; Engineering and&nbsp;the Donnelly Centre for Cellular &amp; Biomolecular Research has received a Connaught Innovation Award for developing a biomimicking substance that better treats retinal detachment.</p> <p>Shoichet's team, led by postdoctoral fellow <strong>Alexander Baker,</strong> has invented a biodegradable material that mimics the properties of vitreous, the gel-like substance that fills 75 per cent of the eye, helping to maintain its round shape.</p> <p>As people age, the consistency of the vitreous, which adheres to the retina, changes. This can lead to the vitreous peeling off and tugging on the retina, creating a tear. Left untreated, the gel substance could leak through the tear and into the space behind the retina, causing detachment and blindness. Current treatment involves inserting a gas bubble into the eye to keep the retina flat. Following the procedure, patients must lie face-down to maintain head position for several days, which is known as posturing. For complicated detachments, silicone oils are used to repair the detachment.</p> <p>“Our vitreous replacement hydrogel will neither blur patient vision nor require posturing or a second surgery, as required with oils,” says Shoichet, who is collaborating with vitreoretinal surgeon, Dr. <strong>Robert Devenyi</strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>The Connaught Innovation Award funding will help advance the work of Shoichet’s vitreous substitute. The non-toxic and biocompatible hyaluronan-based hydrogel would be used to flatten the detached retina, with minimal swelling.</p> <p>“The socio-economic benefit is clear,” she adds. “With our product, patients will be better served, return to work faster, and the cost to the health-care system will be lower.”</p> <h3><a href="https://news.engineering.utoronto.ca/smart-finger-pads-for-robots-among-six-u-of-t-engineering-projects-awarded-with-connaught-innovation-funding/">Read the Faculty of Applied Science &amp; Engineering story</a></h3> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-source field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Engineering</div> <div class="field field--name-field-top-story-hub-page- field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Top Story (Hub page)</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Tue, 10 Mar 2020 21:14:23 +0000 lanthierj 163261 at Three graduate students receive Jennifer Dorrington Award /celebrates/three-graduate-students-receive-jennifer-dorrington-award <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Three graduate students receive Jennifer Dorrington Award</span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-type/research-innovation" hreflang="en">Research &amp; Innovation</a></div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>s.anderson</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2020-02-24T08:23:46-05:00" title="Monday, February 24, 2020 - 08:23" class="datetime">Mon, 02/24/2020 - 08:23</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-people/students" hreflang="en">Students</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-campus field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-campus/st-george" hreflang="en">St. George</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/donnelly-centre-cellular-and-biomolecular-research" hreflang="en">Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/graduate-students" hreflang="en">Graduate Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/faculty-medicine" hreflang="en">Faculty of Medicine</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/ibbme" hreflang="en">IBBME</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/jennifer-dorrington-award" hreflang="en">Jennifer Dorrington Award</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image-orientation field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field__item">landscape</div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/media/group.jpg" width="750" height="500" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item">Sanna Masud, Nil Sahin and Benjamin Kingston (photo of Kingston by Qin Dai) </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Graduate students <strong>Sanna Masud</strong>, <strong>Nil Sahin</strong> and <strong>Benjamin Kingston</strong> are the winners of the 2020 Jennifer Dorrington Award, which recognizes outstanding students in the Faculty of Medicine who are doing research in the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research.</p> <p>“These three winners are doing some of the most innovative research in biology, which has already revealed important new insights and has the potential to improve patient lives,” says <strong>Gary Bader</strong>, a University of Toronto professor of molecular genetics and computer science, and the chair of the award committee.</p> <p>Masud’s research is shedding new light on the cellular basis of Barth syndrome, a rare genetic disorder for which there is currently no treatment.
